Event Details

Alabama nonprofits generate more than $10 billion annually for our state, hold over $20 billion in assets, and employ approximately 5.1% of Alabamians. Nonprofits provide fundamental services that are the key to thriving communities. With the number of charitable donors declining, it's never been more important to gather as a community and grow our collective voice.

We are thrilled to announce the return of the Nonprofit Summit on February 13-14, 2025 in Montgomery and to organize as an important sector of Alabama’s economy. The Alabama Association of Nonprofits hosted the very first statewide nonprofit conference back in 1997. It was an incredible opportunity for nonprofit professionals to gather, learn, and network. This year's conference honors that same tradition while emphasizing the strength and value of a unified voice. Because we will have a distinct focus on advocating for nonprofits, both as a sector and for organizations who have a similar mission to yours, the theme of our conference is: Collective Impact: Expanding our Voice.

Register now to:

  • learn in breakout sessions,
  • be equipped to better understand policy, lobbying, and advocacy,
  • have time to talk with legislators,
  • join an affinity group with your subsector, and
  • hear from our fantastic keynote speaker, Dr. Mark Ottoni-Wilhelm who will help us improve charitable giving in Alabama.

His keynote address at dinner will be, "Declining Number of Donors," based on his years-long study of families and their giving patterns. Learn how the 2017 tax laws have impacted charitable giving and what we can do collectively to increase giving once again.
Mark Ottoni-Wilhelm is Professor of Economics at Indiana University Indianapolis and an Affiliate Professor of Philanthropic Studies at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Professor Ottoni-Wilhelm’s research interests are in the social science of prosocial behavior. His work is about underlying motives of charitable giving, the transmission of generosity from parents to children, the effect of tax policy on giving, and the effect on giving of emotional responses to fundraising messages.

Breakout sessions include:

  • Giving Circles for Communities of Color and Other Affinity Groups led by Marsha Morgan, Community Investment Network, Birmingham Change Fund, and AL Power Foundation

  • Amplifying Your Voice: A Hands-On Workshop for Creating an Impactful Social Media Campaign on a Budget led by Jenn Campbell and Carie Wimberly, Cherry Grove Creative

  • Affordable Health Insurance and Benefits led by Ashley Culliver, PBS PEO

  • State of the Sector and Advocacy Initiatives 2025 led by Tiffany Gourley Carter, Policy Counsel, National Council of Nonprofits (ties in with keynote-speaker topic)

  • Nonprofit Tech Readiness / Reaching and Retaining Donors / Tech Accelerate led by Amy Sample Ward, CEO, nten

  • Creating and Growing Endowments led by Marcie Braswell and the Philanthropic Solutions team, Regions
