The Alabama Association of Nonprofits (AAN) was founded in 1996 under its former name of the Nonprofit Resource Center of Alabama as a collaborative effort of Alabama Power Company, the United Way of Central Alabama and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. Our mission is a simple one – to strengthen the capacity of Alabama’s nonprofit sector through professional development, advocacy and management support, all resulting in better communities and a stronger Alabama.
AAN is the only Association of its kind in Alabama dedicated exclusively to serving the nonprofit sector. Thousands of organizations, nonprofit executives and community stakeholders are impacted annually through professional development courses, advocacy events, speaking engagements by Association executives and the annual Nonprofit Summit. We are committed to establishing a nationally-recognized Standard For Excellence for Alabama’s nonprofit sector while working with elected officials, academic institutions and regional and national funders to promote the core values of ethics, responsibility and nonprofit leadership.
Alabama’s nonprofit sector generates more than $12 billion annually for our state and employs more than 126,000 Alabamians. Alabama’s nonprofits are economic developers, human services providers, community builders and advocates for change. Our executives and volunteers represent the very best Alabama has to offer, and give selflessly of their time, talent, energy and resources toward one common goal – to strengthen our communities by taking care of those in need.
AAN is a proud member of the National Council of Nonprofits, a national network of America’s 37 leading nonprofit associations representing more than 25,000 members. The Association also has nationally-recognized joint operating agreements with leading academic institutions in the state including the Brock School of Business at Samford University and the University of Alabama. The Association’s central offices are housed within the Brock School of Business.
