Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute


NELI Small LogoThe Alabama Association of Nonprofits is pleased to announce that the 2014 Nonprofit Executive Leadership Institute (NELI) will meet on the second Tuesday of every month in Birmingham, Alabama beginning in March 2014.


Interested nonprofit professionals must submit their applications to be considered for acceptance into the program.
NELI will again feature a fantastic lineup of interactive presenters from around the country who are experts on leadership, fundraising, communication and governance. Topics and brief biographies from last year's presenters appear below. The full schedule for 2014 will be released in January.

Tuition for this year's course is $1,650 all inclusive*. NELI is open to all nonprofit professionals in Alabama.

Shannon is responsible for Blackfish Strategies' efforts to capture information about the impact of its work and to learn from this information. She is also responsible for collecting useful capacity building techniques as well as innovative practices and sharing them with the nonprofit professionals we serve.

Kelly McDonald is a nationally recognized marketing expert, with deep specialization in multicultural and diversity marketing. She works with clients such as Toyota, Harley-Davidson, Sherwin-Williams, State Farm and Miller/Coors. 

Kelly is the author of "How to Market to People Not Like You" and has been featured on CNBC, in BusinessWeek, on and on Sirius/XM Radio. Her company, McDonald Marketing, has twice been named one of the top advertising agencies in the U.S. by Advertising Age magazine.
Communicating Effectively As A Leader
Presented by Elaine Lin, Consultant, Triad Consulting Group
Former Chair of the Harvard Negotiator, Elaine Lin has designed and delivered negotiation trainings for a wide range of clients and is equally at ease in the corporate, government, and non-profit sectors.
Her representative clients include Shell, IBM, ANZ Bank, ARUP, Philip Morris, Energy and Water Ombudsman of Victoria, the Red Cross, and various Australian government departments. Lin's work also includes training newly elected political officials, union leaders and instructors at military academies.

Presented by Brian Jones, Principal Consultant, the Table Group
Brian has been affiliated with Patrick Lencioni, author of "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team," since 2005 when he was chosen to be Principal Consultant of The Table Group. Brian facilitates high-impact sessions for senior leadership teams and other intact work groups.

He remains a resource to business leaders everywhere in their pursuit of organizational health as a coach, advisor, writer, speaker, and facilitator. Presented by Carol Weisman, President, Board Builders
Carol specializes in volunteerism, fund raising and governance. She has worked with a wide range of clients from Sing Omaha to the National Council of Voluntary Organization in London, England to the Bermuda Health Care Foundation. She has served on 32 boards and has been president of 7.

Carol has published extensively on governance, volunteerism and governance. She is currently on the faculty of Everyone Ready. She is a past faculty member of the Learning Institute for Nonprofit Organizations and was an adjunct professor at Washington University in St. Louis at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work.

Presented by Allison Black Cornelius, Principal, Blackfish Strategies
Allison's work includes a professional speaking and training tour that numbers over 100 public appearances each year to private nonprofits, leadership groups, faith-based organizations, students, physicians, law enforcement, counselors, legal professionals, government groups, and business groups nationwide.


She trains groups on board development and private/public economic development initiatives. She has extensive experience and a special interest in working with and training faith-based groups. She has trained thousands of board members of both nonprofit and for-profit corporations and has assisted the policy offices of twenty-three U.S.Governors.
